Steven Wayne Fennell pleaded guilty Friday in Jackson County Circuit Court to charges stemming from a crime spree that included carjacking and crashing the car after driving through a golf course, and later entering a person's home to take clothing and beer. Just before noon Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014, Fennell stole a maroon Hyundai sedan parked near the U.S. Bank on Central Avenue while 49-year-old Denise Blackburn sat in the back seat waiting for her friend. The crime occurred just an hour after Fennell was released from jail for charges of shoplifting and resisting arrest after he was caught stealing beer at Sherm's Food 4 Less. Fennell sped away, and Blackburn escaped from the moving vehicle near the WinCo parking lot. She was uninjured but has suffered from a "tremendous" amount of post-traumatic stress since the carjacking, according to Senior Deputy District Attorney Laura Cromwell. Fennell then drove the Hyundai near Fichtner-Mainwaring Park before driving through Stewart Meadows Golf Course and crashing into a fence near South Holly Street and Holmes Avenue. Fennell then burglarized a house in the 1400 block of South Ivy Street. He was caught about an hour later. Nearby Jefferson Elementary School went into lockdown for approximately 30 minutes until police found him hiding in a row of bushes, according to Mail Tribune archives. Fennell was sentenced to 50 months in prison with credit for time served, 3 years' post-prison supervision, and was ordered to pay restitution of $11,712.56. Fennell's court-appointed defense attorney, Donald Scales, called the plea agreement a "fair resolution." He said Fennell was acting "psychotic" at the time and his actions at the time don't fit Fennell's "docile" personality. They waived an insanity plea because prosecutors disagreed that mental health was at the root of the crime. "This would've boiled down to a battle of the experts," Scales said.
