The library district has asked residents to consider one of three possible names: Jackson County Libraries, Libraries of Jackson County or the current name listed on the website, www.jcls.org: Jackson County Library Services. To get some feedback , the district installed a survey on its website to allow residents to vote on the names. The issue over the name has come up at various library district meetings, and the Jefferson County Library District in Madras already has rights to jcld.org. However, the library district currently uses the words “Jackson County Library Services” on its website, which is accessed through the acronym “JCLS.” The name of the governing body established by voters last May is Jackson County Library District. Library district officials have found themselves in a greater hurry to establish a new name because they are devising a logo to differentiate the libraries from the entity that formerly ran them: Jackson County. Bradford initially thought she’d prefer Libraries of Jackson County, but after learning a little more about why the district was considering a name change, Bradford said it would probably be best just to leave it as is, particularly because residents are already accustomed to the Jackson County Library Services website. The library district is getting ready to print up materials explaining the new enhanced hours at many branches, including increasing Medford’s hours from 24 to 40 a week. As a result, the district wanted to nail down its name before the materials were printed. “Maybe we’re over-thinking this,” said Maureen Swift, a library district board member. “It had come up in several conversations with people that we should change the name. We wanted to signal a greater separation from the county.” Swift said she’s seen criticism that the survey and the name change could cost a lot of money, but she said the cost of the survey is less than $30 on the website. There may be expenses associated with removing the county's logo from some buildings, but that would occur regardless of whether the name is changed. The library district board couldn’t agree on a name, and the issue was considered relatively minor compared to the budget and adding hours over the past few months. “It’s not the crisis du jour,” Swift said. “We thought, ‘Why don’t we throw it out to the public.’” The online survey will close on Dec. 2, and the library board will likely vote on the matter on Dec. 4, Swift said. The hours for all the branches will be finalized at the Dec. 4 meeting. Swift said the library district didn’t want to take up the naming issue at this point, particularly with upcoming budget talks starting in January. The county has agreed to give the domain name of jcls.org to the library district. Swift said she doesn’t have a strong preference for a name for the library district. She also said things could stay the same, and the library district could continue to call the library system “Jackson County Library Services” and the entity that runs the libraries “Jackson County Library District.” Jill Turner, library district board chair, said, “I’m still a little undecided myself.” After the residents make their choices on the survey, the district will then make a decision. “I don’t know what it’s going to be,” Turner said.
