COLLEGE BASEBALL Donahue, Beavers down USC at home Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Apr. 26, 2015 at 7:54 PM Posted Apr. 26, 2015 at 7:54 PM » Social News CORVALLIS — Christian Donahue went 3-for-3 and Luke Heimlich tossed four scoreless innings in relief to send the Oregon State baseball team to a 9-6 win over USC Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium. The win gives the Beavers their second consecutive series victory and pushes Oregon State’s record to 27-13 overall and 10-8 in Pac-12 Conference play. The Trojans, meanwhile, dropped to 30-12 overall and 11-7 against league foes. Donahue paced the Beavers offensively, singling in the first, sixth and seventh innings. He also walked with the bases loaded in the fourth for his first RBI of the game. His second came in the seventh on a single through the left side. Oregon State reached base safely 21 times on Sunday via 11 hits, nine walks and one hit by pitch. Following Donahue offensively was Trever Morrison, who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Jeff Hendrix, who tallied a 2-for-3 afternoon. Dane Lund, who had three hits Saturday, was 1-for-2 with an RBI in the fourth on a walk and another in the sixth on a squeeze. Heimlich picked up the win to improve to 2-5 on the year. He came on in relief of Travis Eckert in the fourth and retired the first 12 batters he faced before giving up back-to-back singles. Sam Tweedt came on, got the final two outs of the eighth, bridging the gap to Mitch Hickey, who got the final three outs of the game for his sixth save of the season. OSU went up 2-0 with a two-run third, but watched as the Trojans jumped ahead with a four-run fourth. That, however, did not last long as the Beavers also scored four in the frame. OSU took advantage of four walks in the inning, and got Donahue’s first RBI, a two-run single by Morrison and the sixth run of the game on a passed ball. USC starter Mitch Hart lasted just 3 1/3 innings, allowing only two hits. He did, however, walk six en route to five earned runs allowed. Hart was charged with the loss and dropped to 6-2 on the year. Hart’s counterpart, Eckert, also lasted 3 1/3 innings. He allowed four hits and four runs with two walks and two strikeouts. OREGON 3, WASHINGTON 2, 11 inn. : At Eugene, senior J.B. Bryant worked a walk with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th inning, giving the Oregon baseball team a victory over Washington as the Ducks took two of three in the series. The teams traded runs in the third, with Washington taking a 1-0 lead on the only run it pushed across in five innings of work for first-time UO starter Josh Graham. The Ducks (25-19, 7-11 Pac-12) responded when Mark Karaviotis hit a one-out triple and came home on a single by Jakob Goldfarb. Goldfarb was stranded at third to end the bottom of the third, the first of three straight innings the Ducks left a man at third and four straight in which they left a runner in scoring position. That futility ended in the seventh; the Huskies (23-18, 8-13) led 2-1 when Mitchell Tolman doubled with one out, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Phil Craig-St. Louis groundout. The Ducks loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth for Scott Heineman, but his one-out fly ball to left resulted in a double play when pinch-runner Austin Grebeck was nailed at the plate. The Ducks again loaded the bases with one out in the 11th, and though Heineman struck out, Bryant worked Oregon's second walk-off walk of the season. For the second night in a row, Oregon's relief pitching was superb. After Kohl Hostert loaded the bases without recording an out in the sixth, Trent Paddon entered and ended the inning on three pitches — the first was a double play on which UW scored the go-ahead run for a 2-1 lead, and the third was an inning-ending ground ball. Paddon pitched another scoreless inning, the first of three straight UO relievers to throw two shutout frames. Stephen Nogosek followed suit, getting a double-play ball with two on and one out to end the top of the ninth. Garrett Cleavinger (3-1) then struck out six over the final two innings to earn the win.
