The agency said the attacks were reported at 12:18 a.m. and 1:01 a.m. Saturday, June 20, in west Medford. "In both cases the victims were heavily outnumbered," Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau said. Officers were first dispatched to an area near the intersection of Plum and Prune streets near Union Park, where they found two men — one 23, the other 28 — who had been stabbed in the back. An investigation revealed the men had been walking with a group in the area when as many as five Latino males wearing red — a color worn by the Norteños gang — approached them. A fight ensued, allegedly because "some of the involved parties claimed gang affiliation," a police news release reported. The 23-year-old was stabbed once, the 28-year-old three times. Both were hospitalized, and the 23-year-old was released  Saturday following treatment. The 28-year-old was reportedly in good condition Monday, police said. Less than an hour later, police responded to a fight in the 400 block of South Columbus Avenue, just around the corner from the first incident. When they arrived, police found a that a 19-year-old male had been stabbed in the back. He declined treatment, saying he would seek help on his own, police said. Police said the man was assaulted by several Latino males, but that it appeared to be a different group than the one that attacked the first two men. The suspects haven't been identified. Budreau said it's not known whether any of the victims are in gangs. "That's really what we're trying to figure out," he said. "None of the involved parties were particularly cooperative, including the victims." He added that the location of the wounds doesn't have any significant meaning among gangs. "For whatever reason, it is odd that all three individuals were stabbed in the back," he said. "It's one heck of a weird coincidence."
