Cougars' Bell takes toll on North Valley MERLIN -- Autumn Bell had a major impact in Illinois Valley's 6-4 victory over North Valley in Skyline Conference softball Tuesday. The sophomore second baseman went 3-for-4 from her leadoff spot, knocked in what proved to be the winning run and had seven assists and a putout. "She really came through for us," said Illinois Valley coach Greg Nygren, who had to sit out the contest because of a one-game suspension. "She kept rallies going for us and did a good job in the field." Illinois Valley senior pitcher Justine Johnson allowed only four hits, but two were homers by Charlotte Beck and Meadow MacDonnell. "She's (Johnson) nursing a sore leg," said Nygren. "I could tell it was bothering her, but she hung in there." Beck's solo shot in the fifth inning tied the score at 4-all, but the Cougars answered with single runs in the sixth and the seventh. Bell's two-out, sixth-inning single knocked in Rachel Pierce from second to give Illinois Valley a 5-4 lead. The Cougars padded their lead in the seventh when Stephanie Moore got to second on a two-base error and scored on Julie Shump's single. "It was a big win, bouncing back after a double loss to Henley on Saturday," said Nygren. "We played through some adversity."
