It’s no wonder the movie theater in Brookings was virtually empty when my friend and I were curious enough to check it out. When I was a girl in England, I was in awe of American movies, the fabulous musicals that the Brits could never compete with, even the Westerns were good entertainment. But "Birdman" is really an insult to both actors and audience in my opinion. If you enjoy half-dressed men in their underpants, a story that makes no sense, and the f-word used in almost every sentence then this will suit you. For me. the only thing memorable was the music by Rachmaninoff when the farcical man was flying like a bird, and the poor bloke outside the theater who was quoting from Shakespeare’s "Macbeth" ... "Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more. It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing." That about sums "Birdman" up for me. At least Hollywood got the title right. It is for the birds. — Angela E. Ewing, Brookings Note: No longer running in local theaters, "Birdman" is available on DVD.
