NFL Seahawks' QB Wilson says he 'could have played a lot better' By The Seattle Times MailTribune.com By The Seattle Times Posted Oct. 14, 2014 @ 7:43 pm By The Seattle Times Posted Oct. 14, 2014 @ 7:43 pm » Social News One Monday, Russell Wilson was basking in the glow of a game that might have been his best as an NFL quarterback, a performance that earned him NFC offensive player of the week honors. The next, he was at the Seattle team facility at 5 a.m., trying to figure out what had gone so wrong the day before. “I could have played a lot better,” Wilson said after Seattle’s 30-23 loss to Dallas on Sunday. “I didn’t play my best game.” In fact, statistically it was one of his worst. He was 14 of 28 passing for 126 yards, no touchdowns and an interception, for a passer rating of 47.6, third-lowest of his career. He also rushed for just 12 yards on two carries. The previous week, in a Monday night victory at Washington, he ran for a career-high 122 yards and was 18 of 24 for 201 yards and two touchdowns. So the question is whether the Dallas game was an aberration, or a sign of lingering offensive issues that defenses can exploit? Most of the focus was on the running game, or lack thereof, after the second home loss since 2011. Specifically, Marshawn Lynch getting just 10 carries for 61 yards. “The big thing with them is having an understanding and being true to their identity,” said Bucky Brooks, a former NFL player and now an analyst for the NFL Network. “I think their offensive still revolves around Marshawn Lynch. When he’s running well it changes the way the defense has to play them. I think sometimes they get in a little trouble when they get a little cute and they do some creative things with Russell that kind of detracts from what the focus of the offense should be.” Seahawks coach Pete Carroll acknowledged Monday that Lynch getting just 10 carries “is not enough.” That was far from the only offensive frustration for Seattle on Sunday, however. Among other notable issues: — Seattle continued to struggle on third downs, converting just 5 of 13 for 38 percent, the same percentage it had coming into the game. — After starting out 4 for 4 for 60 yards, including a 53-yard pass to Jermaine Kearse, Wilson was 10 of 24 for 66 the rest of the way, with a long gain of 20. — And Percy Harvin was held to minus-one yard on six touches — three receptions for no yards and three runs for minus-one. Carroll said Monday that Dallas’ defense appeared designed to take away anything from Harvin on the perimeter. Dallas’ defensive line executed a plan to not overpursue and create running lanes for Wilson, instead keeping him hemmed in the pocket. The Seahawks were not able to exploit the Cowboys’ man coverage in the secondary, especially in the second half. “(Dallas) did a good job of making plays and challenging on the outside and Seattle was not able to hit those big plays down the field,” Brooks said. “Other teams will try and do the same. It just depends on Doug Baldwin and other receivers to make plays when they have the opportunities. But I think the coaching staff can maybe do a better job of setting those guys up to take advantage of some of the press coverage they’ll see.” Wilson also said “I was a little off on some throws that I’m normally not. I just felt a little bit off there. … I know I can complete those balls and I know that I’ll get it fixed.” Wilson has averaged 7 yards per attempt this season; last year he averaged 8.25. According to Pro Football Focus, Wilson is tied for the fewest deep passing attempts (defined as 20 yards or longer) among quarterbacks with at least 25 percent of their team’s total attempts, at 13. Carroll, though, said it’s faulty to read much into one game, saying “If you go back and look, we had calls going downfield and some got thrown and contested and some didn’t. We didn’t hit them like we’d like to. … We’re doing just like we always do; hasn’t changed at all.” By The Seattle Times MailTribune.com By The Seattle Times Posted Oct. 14, 2014 @ 7:43 pm » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. fantasy football Calvin Johnson's Injury Makes Joique Bell Week 7 Fantasy Stud Oct. 15, 2014 at 5:57 pm Asiata's Value Makes Him a Week 7 Bargain Oct. 15, 2014 at 4:14 pm Branden Oliver Will Maintain Fantasy Football Value Throughout 2014 NFL Season Oct. 15, 2014 at 3:58 pm Fantasy Football: Projecting Winners and Losers for Week 7 Oct. 15, 2014 at 1:16 pm Is Returning Ingram a Fantasy Target?
