The image that did not come to my mind was," Where is the casino?" So — we will have a giant roulette wheel on the baggage wheel instead of a mural of the Rogue River, Crater Lake, Mount Ashland ski lodge, The Greenway we have a roulette wheel for a casino. Amazing. As in real estate: "Your first impression is your only impression." As in life, as in our county. Thanks for the first impression improvement, county commissioners. Maybe we should also include the giant pot leaf on the runway! Time to move where money doesn't talk so loud and a child's "first impressions" are taken into consideration. Joyce Hess Rogue River Double whammy We've been back stabbed twice as the "energy" barons get their way once again. Allow me to elaborate: They've been extracting natural gas nationwide for years now, at a ruinous ecological cost, using a process called "fracking," then rhapsodizing on TV commercials about how clean it all is, which is a dirty lie. Now the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has cleared the way for an equally ruinous project which will enable the "energy" pigs to sell our American-produced natural gas overseas, where the profits are higher. So much for conserving our own resources for ourselves. It seems there's no place in our government not corrupted by corporate greed. They seem all too willing to sell out to the highest bidder themselves, and to blazes with the people's best interests. There's only one way this evil crime against Mother Earth can be stopped and that way lies with us , the citizens of this country, through letters to our elected officials protesting this outrage. William Mac Bean Central Point A wage proposal Fast-food workers work very hard, usually only earning minimum wage. Tip jars show a customer's appreciation, but can be inconvenient to customers. I propose businesses establish a system that asks customers to round up their charge to the nearest dollar instead of donating to a tip jar if they received good service, and the business itself would match the amount collected. Each month the employees would divide the amount donated. This would allow them to make extra money and would provide an incentive to work harder to increase customer service which would benefit both the customer and the establishment. This policy could go into effect a lot sooner than waiting for politicians to have their input on raising the minimum wage. Tips are a great way to reward hard workers, and would allow them to raise their standard of living. Many of these workers are students who could use the money for tuition, pay medical/dental bills or even buy necessities that they might not otherwise be able to afford. As a community we need to be more progressive and contribute more to help our hard-working citizens. This method would improve our dining experience and the employees' quality of life. Barbara Mercer and family Medford Read 'Sandy' In 1968 a book called "Sandy" by Dayton O. Hyde was published. It is a true story about a sandhill crane. I was a teenage girl when I met Mr. Hyde. He was a rancher in Klamath County, intelligent and sure of who he was. Killing for fun was not necessary to stroke his ego. he was a real man with a soul as big as the sky. Hunt for food? Yes. Hunt for ego gratification? No. The three sandhill killers are selfish, useless, soulless ego trippers. Read "Sandy." It's inspiring and educational, and I highly recommend it.
