Email Story to a Friend June 18, 2006 OSU’s Gillespie extends hitting streak to 17 games By ABE WINTER for the Mail Tribune Cole Gillespie, the Pac-10 player of the year, has a 17-game hitting streak, which ties the team's season high by Shea McFeely from Feb. 23 to March 11. Gillespie singled and tripled against Miami. It was his team-high 29th multi-hit game of the season, raising his average to a resounding .388. Chris Kunda, the Pac-10 defensive player of the year, had an eight-game streak ended, going 0-for-3 with a walk. Tyler Graham had a school-record tying five hits in the 15-0 victory over Stanford to wrap up the super regional. He continued his hot hitting with a double in his first at-bat against Miami. He finished 1-for-4 and is now batting .320. Advertisement SCOTT MAINE, Miami's No. 1 starter, wasn't given much of a chance to live, let alone pitch again after a horrible car crash last August. "He couldn't see, he couldn't talk ... he could whisper," Miami coach Jim Morris said of his visit to the hospital to see Maine. "That's pretty amazing, and he is (amazing) _ without question." Maine, a sophomore left-hander, is now 12-3 with a 4.57 ERA. SATURDAY'S GAME featured one of the shortest rain delays in the history of the sport. The official scorer announced the rain delay at 7:26 CDT, just as the top of the fifth ended. The tarp was rolled out, but the rain stopped before the tarp was unfolded onto the infield. That got the fans chanting, "Roll it back. Roll it back." The umpires signaled the grounds crew to do exactly that and play resumed after a rain delay of officially — drum roll, please — four minutes. "That is believed to be the shortest rain delay in the history of the College World Series," smiling official scorer Lou Spry announced to the media. The second delay, caused by lightning, was considerably longer and the entire tarp was placed over the infield even before the rain started again. GEORGIA COACH Dave Perno watched his team rally with four runs in the seventh inning against Rice, only to give up four in the bottom of the seventh. "When we don't give up big innings, we're pretty good," Perno said. "Unfortunately we gave up one today." The Bulldogs dropped into the losers bracket for the fourth time in this postseason. So they know the feeling of playing each game while facing elimination. "We've been in this position before," Perno said. "We'll just try to regroup and play a better game Monday." THE .213 BATTING average of Ryan Gipson, who hit .330 as a junior, apparently didn't faze coach Pat Casey. He started Gipson, the starting second baseman last year before losing his job to Chris Kunda, in right field against Miami ace left-hander Scott Maine. Batting ninth, Gipson went 0-for-2, including a double-play grounder with two runners on base in the seventh. His average dropped to .209. THE ANNOUNCED attendance of 25,417 pushed the four-game total over two days to 84,732. That's an average of 21,183.
