Grizzlies fall short in playoff volleyball PORTLAND -- After a slow start, the Ashland High volleyball team roared back and nearly knocked off South Eugene in a first-round Class 4A state playoff match Monday. But the Axemen broke away from a 9-9 tie in the third and decisive game to pull out a 15-2, 9-15, 15-9 victory. South Eugene went on to defeat Franklin High of Portland 15-6, 15-9 later Monday to earn a match against Canby on Wednesday. The winner of that tussle advances to the Class 4A state tournament that begins Friday at the Chiles Center on the University of Portland campus. Sarah Lukacs (10 kills, two blocks), Suzanne Kelley (nine kills, three blocks) and Heidi Swanson (eight kills, two blocks) led the way for South Eugene, the No. 4 team from the Midwestern League.
