PUBLIC SAFETY One person suffers smoke inhalation in Ashland house fire on Union Street Comment By Thomas Moriarty Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Thomas Moriarty Mail Tribune Posted Mar. 31, 2015 at 2:32 PM Updated Mar 31, 2015 at 3:47 PM By Thomas Moriarty Mail Tribune Posted Mar. 31, 2015 at 2:32 PM Updated Mar 31, 2015 at 3:47 PM » Social News Firefighters say nobody was seriously hurt in a two-alarm fire that gutted an Ashland home Tuesday afternoon.  Ashland fire Division Chief Chris Chambers said two engines from Ashland Fire & Rescue and one engine from Jackson County Fire District 5 responded to a reported structure fire shortly after noon in the first block of Union Street off Siskiyou Boulevard. Firefighters found smoke pouring from the two-story home and triggered a second alarm, which brought additional engines from Medford Fire-Rescue to the scene. "(There were) five units plus the additional staff we have in Ashland," Chambers said. Firefighters had the smoke knocked down in about 10 minutes, he said. Chambers said a woman who lived on the ground floor was home at the time of the fire and suffered light smoke inhalation, but that there were no serious injuries. The upstairs resident wasn't home, he said. Chambers said the house suffered extensive smoke damage to its interior. "We're going to have to get in there and assess the damage," he said, adding that firefighters don't know yet what caused the fire but believe it started on the ground floor. Chambers said no other buildings were threatened by the fire, whose exterior damage was largely limited to the ground-floor facade.
