Black Tornado senior Colton Westfall fired a two-hitter to lead North Medford to a 1-0 lead in the first game and one of three hits allowed by Jordan Ragan in Game 2 proved costly as Sheldon secured a split with a 1-0 win of its own behind a solo home run by Kellen Strahm. Combined with last Tuesday’s 7-2 win by the Irish, Sheldon (12-5) secured the series win but remains deadlocked atop the SWC standings with North Medford (11-6) at 10-2 apiece. “Today was fun,” said North Medford head coach Brett Wolfe. “Obviously you want to win two after getting the first one but, like we told the kids, none of us are professionals and they all gave their best effort and put a good product on the field and that’s all we can ask of them.” Neither team has time to rest on its laurels, with North Medford playing at Roseburg today while Sheldon visits Willamette. Monday’s doubleheader was rescheduled from Saturday due to weather concerns in Eugene. “We’re trying to get better every day and we played two playoff games essentially today,” added Wolfe. “Now we’ve got to bounce back and be ready for Roseburg because it doesn’t get any easier.” For Westfall, Monday’s game offered up a quick shot at redemption after getting tagged with last week’s loss in Medford. The right-hander struck out 10 and walked only two to improve his overall record to 5-2. “He was pretty motivated,” said Wolfe. “He was disappointed in his last outing and felt he should have done a little better. He wanted the ball and he was ready. His velocity was up and his breaking pitches were sharper than the last time out. He was pretty motivated to execute his pitches.” Sheldon’s Taylor Frost also fared well, allowing only three hits with eight strikeouts and four walks. North Medford finally broke free in the top of the fourth inning when Greyson Wolff drew a one-out walk and, after courtesy runner Dallas DeVry stole second base, Dakota Adams came through with an RBI single. In Game 2, Ragan struck out nine and walked two but Strahm’s leadoff homer in the bottom of the third inning proved to be the deciding factor. Wyatt Johnson struck out six, walked one and scattered six hits to trip up the Black Tornado for the second time in seven days. Ragan had his season-long hitting streak snapped at 15 games by going 0-for-2 with a walk in the opener. The senior, however, went 2-for-3 in the nightcap. Ragan’s leadoff double in the fourth inning put North Medford in position for a tying run but courtesy runner Preston Johnson was ultimately stranded after reaching third base with one out. In the sixth, Ragan singled and, with Johnson again on the basepaths, Josh Berman followed with a perfectly executed hit-and-run to put runners on the corners with one out. The Tornado then unsuccessfully tried for a safety squeeze that was popped up with one out and Johnson got out of the jam for good with a strikeout. Softball EAGLE POINT 5-6, NORTH EUGENE 0-0: At Eugene, Megan Ayres homered and had four RBIs in each game to lead Eagle Point to the Midwestern League sweep. Ayres pitched a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts and one walk in the opener and allowed two hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks in Game 2 for the Eagles (14-2, 8-2 MWL). The sophomore was 3-for-4 with a solo home run in Game 1 and 2-for-3 with a three-run homer in Game 2. Kylene Briggs added two hits in each game and scored twice in the opener, while Kenzie Nielsen had two hits in the nightcap against North Eugene (5-13, 2-9). Marissa Raines and Katie Munsell each were 4-for-6 for Prospect/Butte Falls (7-4), with Munsell coming on in relief to net her fifth pitching victory. Illinois Valley dropped to 0-11. Boys Golf ALL-SWC: At Roseburg, South Medford’s Reese Fisher was one shot off the pace for medalist for the Panthers, who finished in fourth place behind Sheldon in the All-Southwest Conference tournament at Roseburg Country Club. Fisher carded a 2-over-par 74 to finish second to Sheldon’s Ben Wanichek (73), while Alex Brown shot a 78 to help the Panthers score 336 as a team. Jack Singleton was the top scorer for North Medford with an 82. Both Donnie Thomason and Hunter Buschke recorded 82s to help give the Cavers a team score of 347. The Irish shot 351 and were led by Jenny Krause’s 75. MARY’S OPEN: Kamryn Ford’s 9-over-par 81 earned her medalist honors and helped guide tournament host St. Mary’s to a second-place finish at Centennial Golf Club. St. Mary’s shot a 469 as a team while North Valley won the event with a 400. Led by Tristin Vandehey’s 91, the Knights had four of the five lowest scores.
