Crews from the Medford fire department arrived at the retirement complex around 7:40 p.m. with two engines and a ladder truck, Fire Chief Dave Bierwiler said. Phoenix fire department also sent an engine, and Mercy Flights sent three ambulances. Residents had started evacuating the 10-story building when firefighters arrived. Manor employees had extinguished a small stovetop fire on the fourth floor. Smoke drifted into the stairwells and spread to other floors, Bierwiler said. He said ambulance crews were ready to treat any of the residents that needed medical care, but only one person suffering from minor smoke inhalation was taken to the hospital for observation. Bierwiler said his crews regularly train at the Manor to be familiar with the high-rise building and the firefighting techniques that might be needed there in an emergency. Advertisement By 9 p.m., emergency crews and Manor workers had checked to make sure all residents were safe and told them they could return to their apartments. Many, however, lingered downstairs sharing cookies with emergency workers.
