Manufacturers know well that the more choices consumers have, the more sales increase. Ram certainly leads the charge — not just in choices, but in a lot of pickup categories. This week I’m going to focus specifically on the 2015 Ram Laramie Longhorn Edition. It is one of 10 trim levels in the Ram 1500 Series lineup, specifically designed for consumers in the market for a fully capable pickup, yet with luxury features — and in the case of the Laramie Longhorn, a Western flair. What a truck. I think I’ve gotten a few sales assists during this week’s test drive just from folks stopping at the paper and asking if I could show them the truck. The new instrument panel with push button start, a color display and easy to use controls is absolutely phenomenal. And, the power heated and cooled leather seats with a Western motif have certainly captured everyone’s attention. The standard engine for the Laramie Longhorn is the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 (one of my favorite engines) delivering 395 horsepower and 410 lbs.-ft. torque. Mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, it is capable of towing up to 10,370. The four-wheel drive crew cab test vehicle this week had an EPA fuel economy rating of 15 mpg city, 21 mpg highway. Laramie Longhorn is also available with the 3.0-liter turbo diesel V-6 engine that generates 240 horsepower, 420 lbs.-ft. torque. Also mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, it has an EPA fuel economy rating of (drum roll, please) 21 mpg city, 29 mpg highway. Which by the way is a segment leader in the full-size pickup category. The Laramie Longhorn Edition is only available in crew cab body style with seating for five passengers. Consumers have their choice of a 5-feet, 7-inch, or 6-feet, 4-inch bed. As I mentioned earlier in the column, the Laramie Longhorn is a premium pickup, very elegant, very luxurious, and very, very nicely equipped. It would likely take a full page of the paper to list all of the standard features, but to give you an idea, a short list of amenities includes: remote keyless entry and start system; spray-in bedliner; locking tailgate; rear backup camera; front and rear parking assist system; dual zone climate control; Chrysler’s Uconnect audio/navigation and connectivity system with integrated Bluetooth and voice command function; premium leather and wood heated steering wheel; 20-inch wheels; bi-function halogen projector automatic headlamps; fog lamps; tow hooks; and, an impressive 9-speaker audio system. For those in the market for a premium edition 1500 Series pickup, the Ram Laramie Longhorn is a must for the test-drive list.
