The fire was still burning more than three hours after it was first spotted by residents in the area on both sides of the Rogue River. The cause was not immediately known. “We are at this point in time considering it suspicious,” Lt. Mike Shaw of the Rural/Metro Fire Department said at the scene, 4845 Lower River Road, about five miles west of the city. No one is believed to have been home, and there were no injuries. The blaze was first reported as columns of smoke by a resident in the Redwood District, across the river from the 4,600-square foot home, which has an appraised value of $900,000 but was in foreclosure, Shaw said. Another resident, this one the other side of the river on Lower River Road, also reported a column of smoke, forcing Rural/Metro to send out multiple fire engines in search of the source. “The tone-out time was 6 a.m., maybe 6:05,” Shaw said. “Nobody could tell us where it was at. It was 50 percent involved when we arrived on scene.” Shaw said neighbors did not realize the house was on fire until about the time firefighters were first getting there. He said there were no vehicles at the house and it did not appear anyone was home. Neighbors said the house was in foreclosure and that the owners were staying in a mobile home across the street. “Nobody’s answering the door (at the mobile home) and nobody’s answering the phone,” Shaw said, adding, “I would love to talk to somebody. We’ve left messages. Nobody wants to call us back.” Because of the size and value of the property, as well as reports the home was in foreclosure, Shaw said the state fire marshal’s office and arson investigators with the Oregon State Police are taking over the investigation. Nearly four hours after the fire was reported, a ladder truck from the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety was still hosing down hot spots in the structure. Firefighters from Rogue River and the Illinois Valley also assisted at the scene.
