MEMORIAL Fallen White City firefighter to be honored at national service By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Posted Oct. 10, 2014 @ 3:17 pm Updated Oct 10, 2014 at 4:28 PM By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Posted Oct. 10, 2014 @ 3:17 pm Updated Oct 10, 2014 at 4:28 PM » Social News A White City man who died from a heart attack while fighting a 2013 wildfire in Northern California will be among the 107 fallen firefighters, including two others from Oregon, who will be honored at a memorial service in Maryland Sunday. Oscar Montano-Garcia, 54, will be recognized during the 2014 National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg. The event starts at 7 a.m. Sunday. It is sponsored by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and the Federal Emergency Management Agency's U.S. Fire Administration, FEMA reported. More than 5,000 people are expected to attend. The names of the fallen will be added to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial on the academy's grounds. Montano-Garcia, a contract firefighter for Pacific Coast Contracting, Inc., was part of a pump-operations crew fighting the Nabob fire, located in the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest just over the California state line. He collapsed from a heart attack during a lunch break on Aug. 25. Emergency personnel who administered CPR after he collapsed were unable to revive him. Jesse Austin Trader, a 19-year-old Albany resident assigned to the Big Windy Complex about 25 mile northwest of Grants Pass also will be honored at the ceremony. On Aug. 6, 2013, a water truck he drove struck an embankment and overturned on Bear Camp Road. John E. Hammack, a 58-year-old tree faller from Sisters, also will be recognized. A burning snag struck him Aug. 1 while he cleared hazardous trees during a wildfire in the Deschutes National Forest.
