The park, adjacent to Jackson Elementary School and the Jackson Aquatic Center off Summit Avenue, is slated to have $45,000 worth of new equipment no later than June 30, according to the Medford Parks & Recreation Department. The equipment will cost $72,000 to assemble and install, a task that will be handled by Vitus Construction, according to park maintenance superintendent Tim Stevens. Capital improvement funds previously approved by the city will pay for the project, with the equipment purchases mostly funded with Community Development Block Grant dollars. Stevens said the Medford Parks Commission identified the decades-old park equipment as a "priority" for replacement during this biennium. The new equipment will include a traditional Playcraft brand play structure that features a slide, monkey bars and climbing components. There will also be an "UltraZip" zipline play structure, and disc, handicap and toddler swings. The park will remain open during construction, which has already begun, though temporary work zone barricades will be installed around the construction area. The Parks Department recently finished work at Hawthorne Park and is in the process of refurbishing the Holmes Park tennis courts. Officials are also looking into what to do with Bear Creek Park's playground following a recent site assessment, which Stevens said could include either rehabilitating the current Leathers playground structure or making a new one.
