Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 11, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted May. 11, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News May 11, 1915 MISS CONNER TELLS OF RESCUE QUEENSTOWN, May 11 — Miss Dorothy Conner of Medford, Ore., has been caring for patients, among them several titled passengers who were aboard the Lusitania. Miss Connor is a cousin of Henry L. Stimson, ex-secretary of war of the United States. Miss Conner has the thrilling experience of having been rescued after resigning herself to be drowned. She said: "I was standing on the deck beside my brother-in-law, Dr. Howard Fisher, and Lady Mackworth. When the deck became awash, I jumped into the sea with a life belt. After a terrible buffeting from the wreckage, I felt myself become unconscious. "I resigned myself to fate, feeling sure that I would drown. When I revived I found myself on a collapsible boat. I believe these collapsible boats saved more lives than did the regular lifeboats. The latter could not be launched in time, and many of them were smashed or upset by the davits. I know that two lifeboats were launched on the port side." FIRST TRAIN FROM FLOOD DISTRICT THIS AFTERNOON S.P. Train No. 16, northbound, will reach Medford this afternoon at 5:20 p.m. bearing mail and passengers delayed by the washout at Kennett, Calif. This is the first train from the California flood zone since Sunday night. Southbound train No. 13, this morning went as far as Ashland , consisting of but five coaches, the smallest passenger train in years through this city. Train No. 15 this afternoon, will run to Dunsmuir, Calif. Train No. 12 Wednesday morning will run as far as Kennett, Calif. No 14 due here at 8:20 a.m. Wednesday will run between Ashland and Portland as a local. Until the storm abates in the Sacramento valley, the Shasta Limited trains will be routed via Ogden and Pocatello, Idaho to Portland. It is expected that regular service will be resumed on the line late Thursday afternoon, and that the regular schedule will be in effect Friday. Practically all of the eastern mail due to reach the city since Sunday is held up at Kennett.
