Here are a few snippets that made their way through the spam filter. Earth to Freeman: How is it that you get to go fishing and call it work? Everyone Roughly one reader per week (and sometimes a boss) poses that question, and the answer is always the same. Being an outdoor writer in Southern Oregon is work. Maybe not honest work, but it's work. And like all work, there needs to be time away to recharge the batteries. Do you know what outdoor writers do on vacation? We go sit in other people's cubicles, just to get away from it all. Earth to Freeman: Read your (9/5) article on "decriminalizing crawdadding." Ridiculous. Why would the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission waste time on stupid crayfish rules. Anonymous The commission's act of correcting technical rule language that makes crawdadders potentially liable for $435 tickets for keeping non-native crayfish isn't a waste of commission time, at least compared to chukar hunting. Did you happen to catch the commish in action at the Expo last month? Their ability to turn consent-calendar items into floor debates is uncanny. On a break, Commissioner Mike Finley of Medford asked why I didn't go to more of their meetings. "You just spent 2 1/2 hours writing a job description for your new director's search," I said. "Asked an answered." Earth to Freeman: Just read your (5/30) Outdoor Journal on how salmon fishing literally and figuratively sucks on the Rogue just down from where Gold Ray Dam. I know first-hand what it's like losing a favorite fishing hole to "prosperity." I used to fish for chinook upstream of what is now Lost Creek Lake and it still sticks in my craw that I lost a gem of a hole. But your description of catching a sucker instead of a salmon caught my eye. "Three pounds' worth of Hoover-mouthed bottom feeder with the desirability of shingles and the edibility of packing peanuts." Isn't that a little harsh on packing peanuts? B.M. Did you ever eat a packing peanut, B.M., on purpose? If anything, the suckers should feel slighted. Earth to Freeman: I never thought I could say this in public, but after reading your (1/17) article, I feel empowered. "Hello. My name's Joe, and I'm a plinker." Joe Turns out you're quite the Average Joe, when it comes to the gun industry. A National Shooting Sports Association survey found that old-fashioned "plinking" is alive and well across America, and not just your backyard, Joe. In fact, emptying a box of .22-caliber shells at empty cans or bottles accounts for big chunks of the $8.2-billion target-shooting market. The study found that target shooters spend almost as much as what hunters pay annually for guns, ammunition and other gun-related items. And plinkers like you, Joe, account for almost three-fourths of a handgun target shooting and almost half of rifle shots in America. As for you closet plinkers, the NSSF is working on a 12-step program, so you can join Joe proudly at the fence post. Earth to Freeman: I see the ODFW is looking for a new director. Why not toss your hat in. You wouldn't be any worse than they're used to. John F. I suppose I can take that as a compliment, John. Kind of like: "You're in good shape, for 50." Or like what my best reference told the editor after my Mail Tribune job interview in 1988: "I supposed you could do worse than hiring Freeman." Can't see myself working for Da Man.
