While the weather pattern is expected to produce only showers for the next few days, the agency reported a wet and windy series of storms will hammer much of Southern Oregon — mostly on the coast — Thursday into Saturday, with up to an inch possible for the Rogue Valley over that period. While that's significant in a low-water year, it pales in comparison with what could hit areas to the west. "Here we're going to get the rain, but we're not going to get the heavy amounts," said meteorologist Mike Petrucelli. "The more significant rain concern's going to be along the coastal range." The storm won't do much to help the snowpack, except at high elevations, with freezing levels at 7,000 feet. Mount Ashland's peak is just over 7,500 feet. Curry County can expect from 5 to 10 inches, which could result in landslides, sharp river rises and potential flooding. Western Siskiyou County could also see flooding in wildfire burn scar areas. Strong winds of 40 to 60 mph are expected to be isolated to areas east of the Cascades and the Shasta Valley. Sunday night and early Monday morning rainfall dropped four-tenths of an inch at the Medford airport, based on 24-hour totals recorded by the Weather Service. Ashland and Talent saw nearly seven-tenths of an inch, while Eagle Point saw just over half an inch. Cave Junction saw close to three-quarters of an inch. The Rogue Valley also saw a handful of lightning strikes early this morning, with one touching down just east of Medford and a few in Josephine County.
