Ritchie had a couple of big games at the plate as the Pirates strengthened their hold on first place. Phoenix defeated Mazama, 5-1, Tuesday in a matchup of league unbeatens, and the senior Ritchie slugged his first home run of the season. His two-run shot in the fifth expanded the Pirates’ lead to 5-1. It was set up when Dustin Smith hustled out an infield single. Ritchie’s blast came with two strikes and sailed over the left-field wall at Kiger Stadium. "He’s a pretty tough out, even when he has two strikes," said Phoenix coach Joe Hagler. "He puts the ball in play really well." Phoenix is 6-0 in league, one-half game ahead of Henley and one game up on Mazama. On Saturday, Ritchie drove in five runs in a 15-5, five-inning rout of Illinois Valley. He was 2-for-2 and had a two-run triple.
