COLLEGE FOOTBALL Keeping Mannion upright a priority for Beavs OSU hoping to protect QB when Utah visits Thursday By Kevin Hampton Corvallis Gazette-Times MailTribune.com By Kevin Hampton Corvallis Gazette-Times Posted Oct. 13, 2014 @ 5:50 pm By Kevin Hampton Corvallis Gazette-Times Posted Oct. 13, 2014 @ 5:50 pm » Social News CORVALLIS — Keeping Sean Mannion upright will be important for the Oregon State football team on Thursday against Utah. The Utes lead the nation in sacks with 28 in five games. That makes pass protection a big key for the Beavers. “You try to get as good as you can with the protections you’re using and then just do everything you can to make sure you’re correct assignment-wise and then it’s it’s a matter of physically blocking people,” coach Mike Riley said Monday. “You’ve got to get on the right guy and you’ve got to stay on him.” Riley said the Beavers will mix up the protection when the Beavers and Utes meet at 7 p.m. in Reser Stadium. “We always change up protections and have some different stuff going so they just can’t key in on one thing that you’re doing and attack it,” he said. “Then you have to be aware personnel-wise. They have some special rushers that you have to pay attention to.” Offensive tackle flip-flop? The Beavers were practicing with Gavin Andrews at right tackle and Sean Harlow on the left side on Monday. Andrews has been on the left side and Harlow on the right. Andrews said he has a twisted ankle, prompting the switch. The move could carry into Thursday’s game. “It’s been a little hard to play left right now,” Andrews said. “They don’t want me at half-strength playing left while I can play pretty good on the right. That’s what I think our thinking behind this is. “We’re thinking about it for this game, I would say.” Wet weather coming We’ve had an extended summer here in the Willamette Valley, but the rain is finally moving into the area this week. According to the National Weather Service, Corvallis has a 40 percent chance of rain on Thursday. Either way, the conditions should be damp with rain expected most of the week. Riley said the Beavers will wet the football during today’s practice. “It has been interesting,” Riley said. “We’re supposed to be the rain team but we haven’t seen any of it, so if it does rain during the game it will be as new to us as it will be to them. “We’ll try to prepare for that as best as we can.” Hamlett on list Senior tight end Connor Hamlett is on the John Mackey Award midseason watch list. Hamlett was on the award’s watch list prior to the season. He has 18 catches for 219 yards and one touchdown this season. He had a big game against Colorado, finishing with six catches for 52 yards in the Beavers’ 36-31 win. TV change Thursday game against Utah will be broadcast on KFBI in Medford and Fox Sports 2. It was originally scheduled for Fox Sports 1, but was moved due to a conflict with Game 5 of Major League Baseball’s National League Championship Series. The game will also be simulcast on Pac-12 Network and Pac-12 Oregon.
