Blanche's services weren't necessary Thursday, however, as the Ashland guards picked up the slack that helped produce a 78-47 win over Etna in the opening round of the Yreka Tournament. The Ashland guard trio of Dillon Thigpen, Jesse Javna and Cameron Clement combined for 38 points, fueled by Thigpen, who hit 3-pointers on two of the Grizzlies' first three possessions. "He really got the ball rolling for us," said Miller on Thigpen. "One of the big things I wanted was offensive production out of guards." The guards also keyed Ashland's advantage at the free-throw line where the Grizzlies made 25 of 31. Clements went 8-for-8 from the stripe. Advertisement "Our ball movement was really good tonight," said Miller. "I think that's what created a lot of those fouls that sent us to the line." Blanche is due to have his cast removed before Christmas and will be vital for the young Ashland squad to have success in Southern Sky Conference games beginning in early January. "He can create shots for himself and that's something we need right now," said Miller on the 6-5 wing. Talon Haggard had a game-high 17 points and converted on several three-point opportunities coming off offensive rebounds for the Grizzlies (2-2), who will face either Lassen or Del Norte at 7 p.m. today in the second round of the tournament. "Once we start to jell, we're going be a good ball team," said Miller. "But it'll take a good 10 or 12 games before we put it together." Clemens Weber led Etna with 14 points, scoring 11 in the first half. ASHLAND (78) — Costantino 7, Thigpen 13, Jesse Javna 15, Amrhein 5, Clement 10, Wilson 7, Haggard 17, Lipski 4.
