The $2.5 million center at 8333 Agate Road includes spaces where firefighters can practice fighting fires in multi-story buildings, rescuing people from cliffs and helping people trapped in tight spaces, such as manholes or duct systems. There is also a 4-acre paved area for driver training and a 5,000-square-foot warehouse for equipment storage. In addition to training firefighters, the center will be available for utility companies, mills and other businesses and agencies that need to provide workers with safety training, said Ken Johnson, District 3’s division chief and fire marshal. Advertisement Fire districts in Jackson and Josephine counties have wanted such a facility for decades, District 3 officials said. In 2001, the urban renewal agency in White City provided a share of funding and design started. Construction got under way a year ago, Johnson said. Adroit Construction Inc. was the building contractor and LTM Inc. was paving contractor. People can get a look at the new center during an opening ceremony today at 3 p.m. A giant flag that measures 20-by-40 feet will be unfurled on the training tower. Area emergency responders will display equipment. Officials from the state, county, district, other fire departments and local businesses will be on hand to celebrate the center’s opening.
