COLLEGE FOOTBALL With Adams, familiar look awaits Spartans Oregon QB reminds MSU of old foe Russell Wilson Comment By Steve Mims Eugene Register-Guard MailTribune.com By Steve Mims Eugene Register-Guard Posted Sep. 9, 2015 at 5:45 PM Updated Sep 9, 2015 at 5:46 PM By Steve Mims Eugene Register-Guard Posted Sep. 9, 2015 at 5:45 PM Updated Sep 9, 2015 at 5:46 PM » Social News EUGENE — The comparisons between Vernon Adams and Russell Wilson are moving onto the field. Adams has been linked to the Seattle Seahawks quarterback for the past few months after he announced he would transfer to Oregon, using the NCAA’s graduate transfer rule that allowed Wilson to move from North Carolina State to Wisconsin for his senior season in 2011. Wilson led the Badgers to the Rose Bowl that season before losing 45-38 to Oregon despite the quarterback throwing for 296 yards and two touchdowns and also running for a score. Wilson led the Badgers to the Big Ten title with a 42-39 victory over Michigan State in the conference championship game just a few weeks after losing 37-31 at Michigan State in the regular season. “Adams is an exciting player. He can take a bad play and make it a good one,” Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio said Tuesday as he prepares to host Oregon on Saturday night. “He has some Russell Wilson-type traits there, having played against him. It will be exciting to watch him play. He has one game under his belt and we have not played him, so we look forward to the challenge.” Adams joined the Ducks this season to replace Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota, who led Oregon to a 46-27 victory over Michigan State last year at Autzen Stadium. Dantonio said the two quarterbacks present different scouting reports for the Spartans. “I think (Adams’) running ability is a little different,” Dantonio said. “Mariota has great running ability, but he’s a different type of runner. It’s a little bit more quick body. Mariota is tremendous with the ball, riding different handoffs and faking things, I think. Adams is as well, but Mariota, long strider, speed guy, make you miss. ... What I saw Russell Wilson do is improvise very effectively when he played us. You see him do that on a weekly basis, really. I think that’s what you see Adams do. He can improvise. His stature is more like Russell Wilson’s. His quick body is powerful. He looks powerful.” Oregon coach Mark Helfrich said Adams is working to correct mistakes made during Saturday’s 61-42 victory over Eastern Washington. “He’s taken really well to the offense,” Helfrich said. “The biggest thing for a new player at any position and particularly quarterback is knowing when you are right and something doesn’t work and when you are wrong and something does work. If you make the wrong read and it’s a touchdown, you still made the wrong read and should have done soemthing different and vice versa. He’s had a good feel for that and wanting to fix things that weren’t perfect.” Adams will face the toughest test of his college career when the seventh-ranked Ducks visit No. 5 Michigan State. Last year, Oregon was ranked third when it hosted the seventh-ranked Spartans. “It was a great experience, a great national matchup, a big game,” Dantonio said. “We’ve got the same thing now, and that brings national prominence to both programs. It is exciting. They had a great crowd last year and it will be just as loud here as it was there.” By Steve Mims Eugene Register-Guard MailTribune.com By Steve Mims Eugene Register-Guard Posted Sep. 9, 2015 at 5:45 PM Updated Sep 9, 2015 at 5:46 PM » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
