Medford Water Commission board member Jack Day, who has served on the board for 15 years, was eventually reappointed by the council for another five-year term. Before the vote, Berryman told the council that this is the second year there have been 40 applicants, and she said it’s time to give others a chance. "There were several applicants to the water commission that were very excellent applicants," she said, adding that it does not encourage new applicants if the same people keep getting reappointed. The Water Commission, unlike the other commissions and committees, is a chartered organization and the mayor appoints volunteer board members and the council affirms them. Advertisement But after three rounds of the mayor naming an appointee and each council member voting no, the mayor appointed Day, whom the council approved. Councilman Jim Key, who is the liaison to the Water Commission, said he was responsible for the vote. "I am the one who asked the rest of council to support me," he said. Continuity is important, he said. "With the new manager (Larry Rains) on board, he does not need a new water commissioner to train," said Key. There are four other commission board members: Mel Winkelman and Leigh Johnson have each served nine years, Lou Hannum has served seven years, and Tom Hall has served two years. "Turning one over is not going to interfere," said Berryman. Other board appointments the council made include: Budget Committee: Jorge Grillo, Jon White and Ron Anderson; Arts Commission: Shelyea Belfiore, Betsy Moore and Rosamond Gregory; Housing and Community Development Committee: Glenn Smith, Carol Beadle and Gary Stine; Joint Transportation Subcommittee: Carl Carlson and Gary Hathaway; Parks and Recreation Commission: Jerry MacLeod, Mark Stenberg and Colleen McCaffrey; Planning Commission: Carl Bartlett, Jerry Shean, Reid Bastian and Jennings Ruffing.
