Robert D. Knodel, 21, of Medford, arrived at the Upper Table Rock Trail with a small group of friends just before 4:30 p.m. Friday. The group hiked the trail to the top, where Knodel decided to free climb along the side of the rock, the Jackson County Sheriff's Department reported. He lost his grip and fell between 30 and 40 feet down. The sheriff's department and other rescuers, including search-and-rescue volunteers, Mercy Flights medics and a team from Jackson County Fire District No. 3 trained for climbing rescues, responded about 5:30 p.m. to help Knodel. They brought him to the top of Upper Table Rock, where a helicopter landed to whisk him to the hospital. Newspaper archives record four serious falls in the past five years. Bruce Levi Nielson, 21, of Murray City, Utah, was hiking with two friends on the south end of Lower Table Rock when he slipped and fell nearly 200 feet to his death in September 2009. Hikers on Lower Table Rock found the body of 44-year-old Randy Sherman Dow of Central Point in December 2008. He is believed to have died in a fall from the rocks in May 2007. In April 2007, 22-year-old Steven Casey Bouknight of Medford died after falling off an embankment on Upper Table Rock while hiking with his brother. In May 2006, 42-year-old Robert Linkous of Gold Hill was climbing on Lower Table Rock when he slipped and dropped about 50 feet straight down, then tumbled another 30 or 40 feet after he landed on a slope. After a five-hour rescue operation, he was airlifted to safety with a broken ankle and cuts, bruises, sprains and dislocations.
