Cate of La Grande arrived in this city today to assume the duties of agricultural pathologist. Mr. Cate succeeds Dr. M.P. Henderson, pathologist, who resigned in August, and will take over a large part of the farm advisory work previously handled by F.C. Reimer, who in turn will devote most of his time to the experiment station work. He will specialize on agricultural development. Mr. Cate graduated at the Oregon Agricultural college in 1904, and served two years as assistant in pathology. After leaving Corvallis he spent nearly eight years developing a fruit ranch in Linn county, starting with uncleared land and paying expenses by general farming and dairying. He spent two years in investigation of plant disease throughout the state. the past two years Mr. Cate has served as county agriculturist and fruit inspector of Linn county and established an enviable record for efficiency in both lines. L.G. Gentner, acting pathologist, will continue as assistant to Mr. Cate. Concerning Mr. Cate, the LaGrande Observer says: "Claude C. Cate is probably the widest known man in Union county. His work has taken him to every nook and corner of the district, and that he is going to leave will no doubt be greeted with regret from every point. As president of the Union County Fair association he established an enviable record as promoter of better fruits, of more butter production, of more silos and all the modern appliances that go to make farming profitable, Claude C. Cate stood at the head. his personality was such that he could mingle with farmer and fruitman and business man on equality with all and with good grace. "Universally liked, and capable, he demonstrated in a few short years what can be done with more intensified farming in an area not naturally given over to that method of tilling the soil 'Although he goes, his work will remain always,' said a well-known farmer today when told of Mr. Cate's pending departure."
