North Valley stays unbeaten MERLIN - The North Valley string of shutouts came to an end on Friday, but the winning continued. After three whitewashings, Mazama became the first team to score on the 10th-ranked Knights, but North Valley remained unbeaten with a 51-24 Skyline Conference win. Colin Beard rushed 13 times for 162 yards and three touchdowns as the Knights pummeled Mazama for 309 yards on the ground. Trailing 31-0 in the second quarter, Eric Brosterhous hauled in a Kyle Blank 35-yard touchdown pass to end the scoreless string. Just 10 seconds later, an angry North Valley offense opened up a hole for Beard, who raced 66 yards to paydirt. "We hadn't had anybody score on us, and I think the kids were a little mad when they did," said North Valley coach John George. "Then Colin breaks that long one. That kind helped settle us down." Beard opened the game with scoring runs of 22 and 5 yards and Cole Parmelee snagged two scoring passes from quarterback Tim Cunha. "Colin had a great game," said George of his 5-foot-11, 185-pound senior running back. "He ran the ball hard and had exceptional blocking up front. "Overall, it was a great effort for us." The Vikings (2-2, 1-1 Skyline) had 240 yards of total offense, most of it coming in the second half. North Valley (4-0, 2-0 Skyline) totaled 379. Rogue River led after the first quarter for the first time all season, but David Crocker quickly erased that with a 15-yard scoring run. Mike Pagnotta capped the second quarter with an 80-yard punt return for a score to seal the win. Crocker ran for a team-high 94 yards on 11 carries, while Nick Bashans paced the Rogue River ground attack with 93 yards on seven attempts. The Chieftains (0-4, 0-2 Skyline) managed 284 yards of offense, while Illinois Valley (2-2, 1-1 Skyline) rolled up 325. The Mustangs (2-3, 1-1 Skyline) were playing without 10 players who were suspended for breaking school rules. Gauntz also kicked all seven Henley PATs and scored on a 2-yard run. Henley (2-2, 1-0 Skyline) led 28-0 at halftime. Travis Robinson's 20-yard third-quarter interception return for a touchdown cut the Mustangs' deficit to 28-7. Tim VanderStoel, who rushed 20 times for 81 yards, scored the Mustangs other TD on a 6-yard run in the third quarter. Henley's Kirk Cunningham rushed for 126 yards and caught five passes for 185 yards. Henley totaled 581 yards and limited Hidden Valley to 177. Elkton improved to 3-1 on the season. Prospect, which had only nine players see game action, dropped to 0-3. Independent BUTTE VALLEY 12, ST. MARY'S 0 - Butte Valley put two scores on the board in the first half and held on for the win. St. Mary's took the ball the length of the field in the third quarter but turned it over on downs at the Butte Valley 2-yard line. The Crusaders (1-3) had another chance in the fourth quarter after recovering a fumble, but immediately turned the ball back over on an interception.
