Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 17, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Aug. 17, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Aug. 17, 1915 HOOPER ELUDES POSSES, CACHED $1,700 FOR ESCAPE GRANTS PASS, Aug. 17 — Pursuit by posses of John Austin Hooper, who escaped from jail here Sunday by overpowering the sheriff, up to noon today had proved fruitless. Nothing definite of his whereabouts has been reported since he was left standing in the middle of the road at Rogue River late Sunday night by R.E. Kroh, whose auto Hooper had commandeered. It is believed he is making south for California. Posses are searching the hills for the fugitive, in the belief he is attempting to reach the coast through a wild country. While in jail he told Sheriff Smith that he had $1,700 cached in southern Oregon, but did not give the location. If this money was in easy distance, he has reached it by this time. His escape, thereafter, would be aided. It is thought Hooper will not try to escape by ordinary outlets, all guarded, but will resort to his native strategy. That he would shoot to kill if cornered is not doubted. Grants Pass reported this morning that two men had been shot and killed in an effort to capture Hooper. This report was baseless. It was also rumored that he was in this city Monday night. It is probable that Hooper has succeeded in making his way out of the country by this time. How careful Hooper is, is shown by his pal's story as follows: Jol Colinge says that about two weeks ago Hooper first spoke to him of his plans for escape, recounting to him at that time the full details of the break as he proposed to carry it out, and that every day since that time Hooper has coached him in the line of action taken yesterday. He added with a tone of regret that the lessons in physical violence had left him rather sore and bruised at times.
