Catherine Annette Hein died from injuries she suffered when a truck driven by Robert Franklin Brooks crashed into her car at the intersection of Table Rock and East Vilas roads shortly after midnight Sunday before the truck careened into the Lil' Pantry store, triggering a fire, according to police. Brooks, who suffered injuries that were called non-life-threatening, was taken to the Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center in Medford for treatment, said Lt. Bill Fugate of the Oregon State Police, which is investigating the case. Brooks remained hospitalized there today and has not been arrested in connection with this case, Fugate said. Medford police attempted to arrest Brooks on a warrant late Saturday at the Travelodge motel on Alba Drive in Medford, twice hitting him with stun-gun jolts before Brooks allegedly jumped into the truck and sped off, according to the Medford Police Department. Police said Brooks eluded officers through east and north Medford neighborhoods and they were joined by officers from the OSP and Jackson County sheriff's deputies in their attempts to stop the vehicle, including deploying a spike strip on Vilas Road that flattened at least three of the truck's tires. Medford police spokesman Lt. Kerry Curtis declined to comment on aspects of the case, including the speeds at which police tailed Brooks' vehicle in their attempt to arrest him. Curtis referred all questions to the OSP and Jackson County District Attorney Beth Heckert. Further information was not immediately available this afternoon.
