North splits with Bend Fifth-ranked North Medford dealt No. 1 Bend its first loss of the season then endured the Lava Bears� wrath Thursday at Miles Field in the second game of non-conference baseball doubleheader. North Medford won the first game 8-7 before Bend unleashed a 13-hit barrage in a 16-4 victory. The Black Tornado (3-1) trailed 7-6 going into the bottom of the seventh inning of the opener. Freshman Robbie Folsom was hit by a pitch from Matt McMillan, stole second and scored on Shawn Backstrom�s double down the left field line. One out later, winning pitcher Dustin Butler singled down the line to score Backstrom with the winning run. Backstrom finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs, while Brian Weeks was 2-for-3. Butler allowed just one hit over the final four innings and three of his eight walks were intentional. In the second game, Bend (5-1) built a 7-0 lead in its first three turns at bat. McMillan had two hits and scored three times, while winning pitcher Peter Dusan scored three runs and had three RBIs. Folsom tripled in three runs and later scored in North�s four-run third inning. NORTH VALLEY 13, SOUTH MEDFORD 3 � At Merlin, Scott Butterbaugh went 3-for-3 with two doubles and Justin Sullivan added a two-run homer as the Knights earned a non-conference victory over the Panthers. Butterbaugh and Sullivan combined to throw a five-hitter in the five-inning contest. Sullivan and Tyler Hurst each had two hits to pace the Knights (2-0). ASHLAND 11, HENLEY 3 � At Ashland, Nick Ehlers scattered four hits over six innings and Bill Rowe blasted a three-run homer to fuel unbeaten Ashland to the non-league victory. Ehlers, a senior right-hander, struck out seven and walked only one as the Grizzlies moved to 4-0. Ashland broke the game wide open with six runs in the sixth inning. Charles Dotterer walked and Ehlers singled to open the frame. Two outs later, Titus Weston walked to load the bases and then Ryan Decker hit a two-run single. Mike Allen followed with an RBI single and then Rowe came through with his three-run clout. Decker, Allen, Ehlers, Torrance George and Zach Brewer each had two hits for the Grizzlies.
