Faced with full course loads, extracurricular activities and family obligations, it can be a challenge to find the time to study for standardized tests. Spring break can be that time as well as an opportunity to improve study habits, which most high school students need to do before heading off to college, said Rick Kamal, president, EduNova, a group that offers study strategies to students in middle school through college. Kamal, who is also a principal investigator with the National Science Foundation, offered a little background. About 70 percent of high school graduates are getting into college, but less than 50 percent of those are going to graduate in four years. “It’s not financial either. It’s that they cannot stand up to the rigors of college coursework,” Kamal said. “These students lack the ability to manage time well. They don’t have good study skills. It’s not that they’re not smart. They have the cognitive skills but lack the metacognitive skills to plan, set a calendar, manage stress and interruptions as well as the interpersonal skills to work together, negotiate and build coalitions. These skills are especially important in college.” If students want to take advantage of the time off to improve their skills and study for upcoming standardized tests, Kamal offers the following tips: n Take the test. Since you have the time, start the week off by sitting down and taking a practice test in real time. “Find out your areas of weakness and study those,” Kamal said. Work smarter, not harder. If you did well in a section, you don’t need to focus your attention in that area. n Make a plan. Pull out a calendar and mark down when specifically you will be doing a task. “This will help you keep your eyes on the prize,” Kamal said. People who post their goals are more likely to accomplish them. “Research shows that by visibly seeing a goal will make it easier and more achievable,” Kamal said. n Use power hours. Spend time in a dedicated space where you’re comfortable. It could be a quiet study room at the library or a room in your house with music playing in the background. It should be free from distractions and interruptions. Shut off your phone. n Get in the zone and minimize fatigue. Study diligently for 25 to 30 minutes, then take a five-minute break for a healthy snack such as handful of nuts. “Have all your supplies at the ready so you don’t have to leave your space,” Kamal said. Get up and walk around. Do push-ups or sit-ups, then get back to work. If you’re pulling long hours, you’ll need a half-hour break to remain focused and energized. Be conscious of noise. “If you’re focused on something that’s dull or boring, the slightest background noise is distracting,” Kamal said.
