After today's clear skies and an expected rapid falling of temperatures to below freezing tonight, a warm front coming in from California is expected to bring rain that may freeze upon contact when it hits the cold ground. When precipitation from the warmer front aloft falls into the freezing layer below it, it doesn't have time to turn into snow, explains Brad Schaaf, Medford meteorologist. "It freezes on contact on anything," he says. Light snow could start falling as early as 9 or 10 p.m. today, Schaaf says, with the warmer air and possible freezing rain arriving about 4 a.m. Sunday. "By 10 a.m. it should be done," he says. "If any freezing rain occurs, travel on roadways will become hazardous as the roads will become very slippery," the weather service warns in its advisory.
