And once again, local service agencies are more than happy to lend a hand to raise funds for charity or group activities. For a small donation, the Boy Scouts, Civil Air Patrol and members of the Moose Lodge will pick up Christmas trees from curbsides on certain days, starting Friday. Other pick-ups are scheduled Jan. 11. Other options are available for pickup and self-haul. Many trees picked up by local service organizations are made into mulch or sent to Biomass One in White City, where wood waste is burned to make electricity. Other groups, such as Ashland and Talent Scouts, will donate the trees to Ashland Parks and Recreation for mulch on Lithia Park trails. The trees should be stripped of all lights, wires, tinsel, ornaments, nails and stands. Foreign materials can jam chipping machines and aren’t suitable for compost piles. Flocked trees will be accepted for disposal via Biomass One. Drivers from Rogue Disposal and Recycling will pick up trees from customers. Customers are required to call ahead to avoid confusion with pickups arranged by other organizations. Another option for Rogue Disposal customers — cut up the tree and put it into your yard debris container for no additional charge. Customers can put branches up to 2 inches in diameter into the yard debris container. The program turns yard waste into compost. Ashland Sanitary & Recycling Service, which accepted trees last year, is directing its customers to the Boy Scouts’ pickups. Another agency that accepted trees last year — Southern Oregon Sanitation — is urging Shady Cove and Eagle Point residents to have their trees picked up by the Boy Scout and Showa Japan Homestay, a group of Eagle Point Middle School students raising money for a trip to Japan. Money collected by Boy Scouts will be used to pay for things like summer camp. The Moose Lodge will donate all its proceeds to Dogs for the Deaf, CASA and Smart Read. The various organizations have distributed fliers throughout neighborhoods regarding the pickups and donations. Residents who haven’t received information might not be on a pick-up list and should contact the agencies listed here. Curbside tree pickup schedules MEDFORD Boy Scouts — Trees must be curbside by 8 a.m. for Saturday pickup. Contact Rob Lebel, Scout Troop 91, 664-3641. EAGLE POINT Boy Scouts — Trees must be curbside by 9 a.m. for Saturday pickup. Contact Rob Rowe, Troop 48, 826-1936. ASHLAND/TALENT Boy Scouts — Trees must be curbside by 8 a.m. for Jan. 11 pickup. Contact Darryl Grupe, Troop 112, 482-0042; and Gary Galligan, Scout Troop 535, 535-7581. CENTRAL POINT Boy Scouts — Trees must be curbside by 8 a.m. for Saturday collection. OTHER OPTIONS Biomass One — The company will accept one tree at no charge from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week at 2360 Avenue G, White City. Call 826-3357 for more information. Rogue Disposal — Customers are charged $1.50 per 3-foot section of tree. Pickup is available year-round, call 779-4161 for information and to arrange pickup.
