Sanctuary One received the 15-ton donation from Blue Buffalo Pet Products Inc. of Connecticut earlier this month. It has since been shared with other animal care agencies in southwest Oregon and Northern California, including Jackson County Animal Care & Control, the Rogue Valley Humane Society, Southern Oregon Humane Society, the Josephine County Food Bank, Wildlife Images and the Del Norte County Animal Shelter.  "As soon as we got it, the next day, we made phone calls," said Brooke Nuckles Gentekos, Sanctuary One executive director. "It was three solid days of unloading two trucks and then making sure that it was all distributed." The nonprofit received the donation through a partnership with Best Friends Animal Society. The Utah-based organization helps market adoptive rescue animals, Gentekos said. The year-long partnership has paid off, she said. In 2014, Sanctuary One adopted out 69 animals. So far this year, they have found home for 75.  The organization also helps facilitate donations such as the dog food, donated because of surplus amounts, Gentekos said.  "This was the first time we've received a dog food donation of this size," she said. "All the stars aligned and it worked out." Blue Buffalo's website says the company began when the founders' dog began to suffer a host of health issues, prompting the creation of their own pet food. Jackson County Animal Care & Control manager Barbara Talbert said the county shelter received 80 bags.  "What’s nice about it is it’s higher quality food than we get as donations," Talbert said.
