KLAMATH FALLS Chemical 'bomb' found at jail About 100 evacuated from site Comment By Holly Dillemuth H&N Staff Reporter MailTribune.com By Holly Dillemuth H&N Staff Reporter Posted Jul. 17, 2015 at 2:00 AM By Holly Dillemuth H&N Staff Reporter Posted Jul. 17, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News The Oregon State Police bomb squad of Central Point removed and “neutralized” a chemical device from the entrance to the Klamath County Jail between 1:30 and 2 p.m. Thursday, causing a temporary evacuation of about 100 people and a temporary lockdown of the jail, according to Klamath County Sheriff Frank Skrah. Klamath County Fire District No. 1 also responded to the scene, 3300 Vandenberg Ave., in Klamath Falls. Jail Commander Lt. Jeanette Davis found the “chemical destructive device” outside the the main entrance to the Klamath County Jail around noon. Davis then notified Skrah, who had been in a meeting with Klamath County District Attorney Rob Patridge. “It looked like a two-liter bottle,” Davis told the Herald and News. “It didn't have any wrappers or anything like that. It had a little bit of bit of blue masking tape or painter's tape on top. It had pink flagging ribbon tied around the neck of the bottle at the top, and it had a little brown substance — partial liquid, partial solid sediment in different layers.” Skrah said he couldn't further identify the substance inside the bottle. He said the first door that leads into the jail is always open, but the second door is locked. “The second door … somebody had leaned a chemical destructive device up against it,” Skrah said. Skrah said the bomb squad removed the device, isolated it, and then “neutralized” the device. The Klamath County Sheriff's Office is investigating foot traffic traveling in and out of the jail, he said, as well as who came into the office to post bail. “Whoever the individual who placed it there has no regard for anybody's safety whatsoever, for the public or law enforcement,” Skrah said. “They apparently just didn't give a damn. “I've see this stuff in Los Angeles when I was down there all the time,” Skrah added. “You don't expect this kind of stuff here in Klamath Falls. It's a first unfortunately, and let's hope it's the last.” Davis said in more than 30 years with the department, she has never seen such an incident occur at the building.
