Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend August 27, 2005 Man sentenced in sex crime also sought in California A man convicted of molesting a woman in her hospital bed last year was ordered Friday to serve more than five years in an Oregon prison before his likely extradition to California, where he faces further charges. Richie Lee Nevis, 54, of Santa Cruz, Calif., was sentenced to 65 months in state prison. In May, Nevis pleaded guilty in Jackson County Circuit Court to charges of first-degree burglary and attempted first-degree unlawful sexual penetration, in connection with a September 2004 incident at Providence Medford Medical Center. Four counts of fourth-degree sex abuse and two counts of first-degree burglary were dismissed in exchange for his guilty pleas. "I’m very sorry for being involved in any criminal activity," Nevis told Jackson County Circuit Court Judge Lorenzo Mejia. "I do apologize." Posing as a medical student, Nevis sexually touched a female patient in her hospital room, officials said. The victim told hospital staff, who called police. At the time, police did not know he was the Providence suspect. Following Nevis’ release from an Oregon prison, he is expected to return to California to face felony charges of assault with a deadly weapon, battery, sexual battery, battery with great bodily injury and making terrorist threats, in connection with the assault of a female student at the University of California, Santa Cruz, in September 2004, according Santa Cruz County court records Mejia said during Friday’s sentencing hearing that if Nevis is convicted in California, he will likely serve life in prison under that state’s "three-strikes" law.
