Cougs clip short-handed Pirates Boys prep basketball PHOENIX -- Short-handed Phoenix could not keep pace with Illinois Valley in Skyline Conference boys basketball Saturday. The Cougars capitalized on a big advantage from the foul line, pinning Phoenix with its sixth loss in seven outings thanks to a 102-86 victory. Phoenix (6-10, 1-6 Skyline) was missing starting point guard Sean Murphy and lost starting wing Kevin Jeffers to a back injury in the opening quarter. "Their press didn't necessarily hurt us, but they turned it into a real up-tempo game," Phoenix coach Randy Shipley said. "It's the pace we like to play, but without Murphy and Jeffers we got a little tired at the end. They're two of our best defenders." Both teams had equal production from the field, but IV went to the line 41 times and converted 32, while Phoenix was 14-of-24 from the foul stripe. Illinois Valley opened things up in the second quarter when it hit 13 of 15 free throws and outscored Phoenix 30-19 to take a 56-39 lead at intermission. "We seemed to be a step slow all night," said Shipley. Junior guard Justin Neville sparked the Cougars with 32 points and senior guard Ry Heller added 21. "I was most pleased with the play of Landon Rhodes," said Shipley. "It was a very complete game." The Pirate junior shooting guard tossed in 15 points and handed out seven assists without a turnover. Andy Bartels had another big effort for the Pirates with a game-high 35 points. HENLEY 67, HIDDEN VALLEY 62 -- At Klamath Falls, junior wing Michael Nunes helped Henley take over sole possession of first place with a 21-point, nine-rebound, four-block performance. The Hornets (9-5, 6-1 Skyline) entered the contest tied with Hidden Valley (10-6, 5-2) for the conference's top spot. Henley led by as many as 14 points in the first half, but the Mustangs cut the deficit to five at the break and got within two with 1:32 to play before the Hornets gained some breathing room. For Hidden Valley, Willy Isley had 19 points, four assists and three steals and Dereck Horning added 18 points and three assists. MAZAMA 50 NORTH VALLEY 48, 2OT -- At Merlin, Mazama's Mark Strom scored 27 points, including a key 3-pointer and two clutch free throws to lift the Vikings in double overtime. Down by three to North Valley, Strom sent the game into overtime by hitting a 3-pointer with 14 seconds left in regulation. In the second overtime North Valley was called for a blocking foul that sent Strom to the foul line with 11 seconds to play. Strom converted both free throws to give Mazama a two-point lead. Tuttle set a school record with 36 points, breaking Darren Hemmer's previous mark of 35 in 1997. Tuttle added 12 rebounds.
