A car that witnesses said was driven into the Rogue River March 26 at Schroeder Park was pulled out of the river Monday afternoon — with nobody inside. Josephine County Marine Deputy Ernie Fields said Monday he'll be contacting witnesses to try to solve the mystery. "All four of the windows were open, and we didn't find anybody inside," Fields said. "The original information I had, they thought there was a driver and the driver had brown hair." Fields will ask people if the car possibly was pushed into the river empty. The car, a silver 1999 Mercury Sable sedan, was reported stolen in Grants Pass two days after it went into the river at the Schroeder Park boat ramp. Also, no one has called with information about missing people, Fields said. Fields said he didn't want to release license plate and registration information during the investigation. The car was spotted under water Sunday afternoon by a fishing guide about 200 yards downstream of Lathrop Landing boat ramp, in about 10 feet of water. Lathrop is about a half-mile downstream from Schroeder Park. According to Brad Bennett of Oregon State Police, Fairgrounds Towing pulled the car out around 1 p.m. Monday from the south side of the river. Josephine County Search and Rescue divers secured a chain to the car, and a cable was run from the tow truck to the car. "It came out of there real nice and easy," Bennett said. The river level has dropped 1.5 feet since witnesses saw a man, or thought they saw a man, drive the car into the river at the boat ramp at Schroeder Park. The car was seen slowly sinking as it floated downstream. Anyone with information related to the case is urged to call the sheriff's office at 541-474-5123, Ext. 3.
