Mike Harris, 50, of Cave Junction veered off the highway and smashed into a support beam and through the metal doors at the station, around 5 a.m. He was headed south. Illinois Valley Fire District responders removed Harris from the truck, a 2003 Chevy Silverado, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Illinois Valley Fire Chief Dennis Hoke. The cause of the crash is undetermined. A California Highway Patrol collision report indicates Harris was not wearing a seat belt. Harris graduated from Illinois Valley High School in 1983. Delbert Kauffman of Kauffman Wood outside Cave Junction said Harris graduated with his son Zac Kauffman. Harris was a jack of all trades, Kauffman said. He'd done remodeling, home construction, and built outdoor furniture and other specialty things with logs, Kauffman said. "He was a craftsman." Harris also coached youth sports.   By Jeff Duewel Grants Pass Daily Courier MailTribune.com By Jeff Duewel Grants Pass Daily Courier Posted Mar. 6, 2015 @ 4:47 pm » Comment or view comments   /* $( document ).ready(function() { // Jquery mobile is trying to style the button and leaving a blank gry button on top of a white button $("#viafouracoms .vf-comment-controls li.vf-right").html(' Submit '); });*/ »  STAY INFORMED   Email NewsLetter   Sign Up Today   Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. calendar Connect with MailTribune.com Facebook Twitter RSS Back to top Reader Services Reader Services Home Subscriptions Subscriber controls Contact us Submissions Photos Events Letters to the editor Corrections Announcements Obituaries Story ideas Since you asked Alerts Email Alerts RSS Feeds Text Alerts Advertise Media Kit Home Products and services Ad rates Advertising contacts Mail Tribune Daily Tidings The Nickel Shop Our Valley Blogs Stay Informed   Email newsletter   Sign Up Today   Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
