Henley gets the best of Lakeview in Skyline showdown KLAMATH FALLS - In front of a large, noisy crowd at the Henley gym Thursday, Lakeview came out strong - charging to a first-game victory against the Hornets. Top-ranked Henley reversed the momentum and defeated No. 2 Lakeview, 5-15, 15-11, 15-10, in Skyline Conference volleyball. The victory clinched at least a share of the Skyline title for Henley (27-2, 12-0 Skyline). The Hornets hold a two-game lead over Lakeview (27-4, 10-2 Skyline) with two remaining league matches. Henley has pinned both losses on the Honkers. "They jumped on us the first game," Henley coach Chuck Shannon said. "They were attacking, and we weren't passing the ball. But our kids have a lot of pride. We played gritty. We made plays when we had to make them." The Honkers led 7-3 in the decisive third game, when Sam Young served six straight points to give Henley a 9-7 lead. "(Young) didn't have any aces but served a lot of tough serves and, we got some free balls back," Shannon said. Junior middle Staci Maupin sparked the Hornets' front row with 13 kills, while Young added nine. Henley setter Katherine Stock contributed 29 kills. "(Maupin) cranked it up when we needed it," Shannon said. The Hornets turned the match around with effective passing. "You don't beat Lakeview unless you're swinging at the ball," Shannon said. "We were more aggressive and weren't giving them as many easy passes." For Lakeview, senior middle Frances Hartman led the attack with 15 kills and four blocks. Setter Megan Albertson added six kills, three blocks and 20 assists PHOENIX 15-15, ILLINOIS VALLEY 1-1 - At Cave Junction, junior middle hitter Tiffany Ross slammed 13 kills to go along with three blocks for Phoenix. Senior outside hitter April Darby added seven kills and two blocks for the Pirates (19-7, 7-4 Skyline), while Kelsey Russell had 21 assists. Teammate Kacie Kantor was perfect in 11 attempts from the service line with four aces. ROGUE RIVER 15-15, MAZAMA 11-8 - At Klamath Falls, Rogue River kept the pressure on Mazama with a well-orchestrated offense. Mazama played tenacious defense but couldn't mount an attack. The Chieftains aggressiveness at the net proved to be the difference. NORTH VALLEY 15-15, HIDDEN VALLEY 11-4 - At Murphy, the Knights evened their Skyline mark at 6-6 with a sweep of the Mustangs. Hidden Valley (1-13 overall, 0-12 Skyline) got seven digs and eight assists from junior setter Laura Miller, six digs from senior defensive specialist Krista Hudson and four kills and three blocks from junior middle Breanna Ferrel. Elaina Renius led North Valley (11-8 overall) with 12 kills, while Whitney Coston added 10. Nicole Roberts had a team-high seven digs.
