IN COURT California women sentenced in travelers check scheme Two California women who ripped off $4,500 worth of merchandise and cash using bogus travelers checks and fraudulent exchanges at Rogue Valley stores in July will each spend more than three years in prison. Debbie Burrell Townsend, 50, and Kimberly Michelle Campbell, 56, both of Los Angeles, each pleaded guilty to 14 counts of identity theft, one count of first-degree theft and one count of criminal possession of a forgery instrument in Jackson County Circuit Court Tuesday, the Jackson County District Attorney's Office reported. Townsend also pleaded guilty to attempting to elude a police officer. Judge Timothy Barnack sentenced Townsend to 42 months in prison and Campbell to 40 months. Both women also have been ordered to pay restitution . The case started July 22  when Kohl's loss prevention department called Medford police to report two women had purchased items at the store using counterfeit travelers checks. Police saw two women matching the description of the suspects at a car in a parking lot north of Kohl's. Police detained Campbell, but Townsend tried to flee. She was stopped near the Rogue Valley Mall's north exit. Deputy District Attorney Jeremy Markiewicz said the women had targeted numerous additional businesses in the Medford area, including Target, Chico's, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Albertsons and Safeway. A search of the car turned up an envelope containing thousands of dollars in gift cards and currency. A separate envelope had 57 uncut counterfeit travelers checks. The women also had fake driver's licenses. Investigators said they found evidence that the pair had worked the fake check scheme in several states. Campbell told detectives that  she and Townsend sometimes would buy a greeting card and a $100 gift card with the counterfeit checks. At other times, they would purchase items from a chain store with the bogus checks, then return the merchandise at a different store in the chain in another city.
