The article compares a Prius versus a Ford F150 using a tax based on gas consumption. The Prius pays less and the F150 pays more. The Prius EPA is 50mpg, the F150 is 18mpg. With an annual mileage of 10,000, the F150 uses 555 gallons the Prius uses 200 gallons.Under the current tax, 30 cents per gallon, the Prius pays $60 and the F150 $166 annually. With the proposed tax of 0.015 cents per mile, both would pay $150. The Prius, consuming less fuel, would have a tax increase of 150 percent; the F150 would have a tax decrease of 9.64 percent. The average curb weight of the Prius is 3,000 pounds and the F150 is 5,000 pounds. The goal of the OReGo plan seems to reward the heavier vehicle, which consumes more fuel and causes more damage to the infrastructure, and penalize the vehicle that conserves fuel and causes less damage. More than EPA must be used to calculate the tax per mile. Tom Smith Medford Gun laws no answer Ten people were shot and killed and 54 were injured in Chicago over the Fourth of July weekend. And yet, Chicago has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the country. When are they going to realize that ridiculous gun laws are not the answer to curbing gun violence? Richard Cody Applegate We have forgotten God We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven. We have been preserved, these many years, in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth and power, as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us! Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of prayer and fasting on March 30, 1863. The recent Supreme Court ruling has shown the world the truth of these words spoken so many years ago — we have forgotten God. President Lincoln had the faith, wisdom, courage and leadership to seek the help of God for the nation in those troubled times. The current administration apparently does not. Ron Lewis Medford 'We will destroy you' About Trump: There once was an ideal in the media, "We will defend to the death your right to say it," now changed to "Offend our liberal politically correct culture, and we will destroy you."
