Fire on Old Stage Road contained quickly Thursday By Mail Tribune staff Updated: Jul 21, 2022 01:11 PM A A Firefighters have contained another grass fire in Southern Oregon to a footprint of roughly an acre. Oregon Department of Forestry Southwest Oregon District and Jackson County Fire District No. 3 pounced on a vegetation fire reported at 11:50 a.m. Thursday, according to dispatch info via PulsePoint. The fire was contained within an hour, according to ODF Southwest Oregon spokeswoman Natalie Weber. When reached by phone about 12:45 p.m., Weber said crews had the fire 100% wet lined with a footprint of roughly an acre. For the rest of the afternoon, crews will be digging handlines to reinforce the wet line. Weber said crews focused on an aggressive initial attack, although exact resources were not immediately available. “I can tell you we sent a full bloc response,” Weber said, describing resources that included a type 3 helicopter. Initially a type 2 helicopter was ordered as well but was released. The fire is among seven wildfires to break this week, most of which have been contained at less than an acre. The exception — and the largest fire of the year thus far — is the Cheney Creek Fire outside Wilderville, which is fully lined at 29 acres. Weber said ODF’s priority is to aggressively fight new fire starts and contain wildfires as quickly as possible. “We definitely try to put them out as quickly as we can to be ready for the next report that we get,” Weber said.
