The Grizzlies amassed 171 yards rushing and scored four straight touchdowns to overcome an early deficit in a season-saving 32-15 Southern Sky Conference victory over Mazama Friday night at Walter A. Phillips Field. Ashland scored on its first possession, then stalled, but improved as the game wore on against the overmatched Vikings. Justin Meza rushed for 100 yards and three touchdowns, and Gus Gaviglio completed 10 of 14 passes for 145 yards and two scores as Ashland (3-4, 1-1 SSC) kept its playoff hopes alive for at least another week. "I think they took the bull by the horns and got some things done in the second half," Ashland head coach Charlie Hall said. "It was nice to see." Advertisement Mazama running back Alex Stewart plowed into the end zone from 3 yards out midway through the first quarter to give the Vikings (2-5, 0-2) the early lead. It didn't last long. Ashland responded with two touchdowns in the second quarter and two more in the third, including a 6-yard bolt by Meza that gave the Grizzlies a 25-7 lead. Gaviglio also delivered. The senior tossed an 8-yard scoring strike to brother Sam, capping an 80-yard drive with 46 seconds to go in the first half, then threw an 18-yard TD pass to Talon Haggard on the Grizzlies' first possession of the third quarter. The solid offensive outing — Ashland outgained Mazama 316 yards to 178 — was a breath of fresh air to Hall, who watched the Grizzlies struggle through consecutive losses to Marshfield and Crater. "It was nice to see the balance because Mazama went away from their base defense," he said. "They put eight guys up front to try to stop the run and so we had to go take some shots in the air, and it was good to see us take advantage of that adjustment." Haggard caught three passes for 69 yards to lead the Grizzlies' receiving corps. Defensively, Bronz Kaae had a team-high 91„2 tackles. Mazama quarterback Larry Wagner completed 13 of 21 passes for 88 yards and also rushed seven times for a team-high 39 yards and a touchdown. Ashland's defense held Mazama to 90 yards on 32 carries. Matt Porter caught a 29-yard touchdown pass from Tory Snyder in the third quarter, then Snyder scored from the 1 in the fourth to seal the win. The Pelicans (4-2, 1-0 SSC) held the ball for about six minutes before tacking on the final TD, dropping the Eagles to 2-5, 1-1.
