Five teens sent to hospital after crash near Medford Comment By Nick Morgan Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Nick Morgan Mail Tribune Posted Apr. 21, 2015 at 6:53 PM Updated Apr 22, 2015 at 8:06 AM By Nick Morgan Mail Tribune Posted Apr. 21, 2015 at 6:53 PM Updated Apr 22, 2015 at 8:06 AM » Social News Five teens were hospitalized after the SUV they were riding in left the road and struck a tree shortly before 11 a.m. Tuesday in the 5200 block of Dark Hollow Road outside of Medford, according to the Jackson County Sheriff's Department. No fatalities were reported. Phoenix police and Jackson County Fire District 5 joined the Jackson County officers in responding to the scene. "Three were what we consider minor injury, and two are more serious," Sgt. Nathan Sickler of the sheriff's department said. Sickler said he didn't have specific ages of the injured teens but estimated they were all high-school age. He didn't know if they all came from the same school. The five teens were transported to Rogue Regional Medical Center, according to Fire District 5. Of the two seriously injured passengers, Sickler said one passenger fared worse than the other. “I would say one would be more serious than the other,” Sickler said. “I know they’re still undergoing treatment.” According to a release from the sheriff's department, the vehicle was described as a green Ford Explorer. The model year of the vehicle and whether the vehicle's airbags deployed was unknown at press time. The release stated that the vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree, and that speed was believed to a factor in the crash. “It seemed like the driver lost control of the vehicle due to some speed trying to negotiate a corner of some sort,” Sickler said. “He went off a corner and hit a tree.” The cause of the accident is still under investigation, according to Sickler. “Due to the nature of the crash, the information will be sent to the DA's office for review of possible charges,” Sickler said. The sheriff's crash reconstruction teams will collect evidence about the accident's cause, according to Sickler. “All off the information will be collected, and evaluated to see if the behavior was reckless,” Sickler said.
