Lisa Trujillo and Jack Hawkins, who both have medical training, received commendations from Fire Chief Brian Fish Thursday evening for stopping to render assistance when they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds. “For that effort and for using both of your skills, we’d like to honor you,” Fish said at Fire Station 2, which is less than a mile from where the shooting took place. Medford police arrested 20-year-old Juan Antonio Gonzalez-Marquez, a suspected Norteno gang member, about one hour after the 8:12 p.m. shooting on Prune Street near Union Park. According to police, Gonzalez-Marquez is suspected of shooting 22-year-old Alex Adrian Enriquez, who was taken to a Medford hospital after suffering gunshot injuries to his upper torso and leg. Trujillo and Hawkins, who are engaged to be married, were driving home after 8 p.m. along Prune Street near Union Park. “We saw some commotion in the neighborhood, and we heard someone say, ‘He’s been shot,’ ” said Trujillo, 35, who works for Asante. “We held pressure on the wounds until the EMT’s (emergency medical technicians) got there,” said Hawkins, 39, who works for Providence. “We just wanted to help.” Hawkins worked on the back wound, and Trujillo attended to the leg wound. Hawkins was trained as an Army medic, though he hasn’t been deployed to a combat zone. Trujillo said she has 16 years of medical experience. They both said their training kicked in as soon as they saw the injuries even though it was Trujillo’s first gunshot wound. Hawkins said he’s had extensive training in the Army to deal with gunshots, and it just kicked in immediately. “I’m glad with my training that I didn’t have to think about anything,” Hawkins said. “There was no nervousness and no second-guessing,” Trujillo said. The couple hope to visit the victim after he gets better. They were carrying medical gear that helped stabilize the victim. Firefighters gave the couple latex gloves and other supplies to replace what they used that evening. Firefighters congratulated the couple and took their children on a tour of the fire station and fire engine, crediting the couple with helping save the victim’s life. “I have a feeling we had a strong impact on the situation,” Hawkins said. The couple seemed a little surprised at the attention they received, but they said their first instinct is to always help people. “We’re the type of people that would give homeless people water,” Hawkins said. “Too many people would have driven by without stopping.” Many residents of the Union Park area have expressed concern about crime and gang violence, but the couple said it is generally a safe neighborhood. When their children are in the yard, the couple acknowledge they are “hypervigilant.” “Bad things happen everywhere,” Hawkins said. “But we can make it a better neighborhood.” Reach reporter Damian Mann at 541-776-4476 or [email protected].
