Tornado clinches SOC volleyball crown North Medford clinched at least a share of the Southern Oregon Conference volleyball title with a 15-10, 15-10 victory over Klamath Union on Tuesday night. "We are still in control of our destiny," North Medford coach Ron Beick said. The Black Tornado, which hosts South Medford in the regular season finale on Thursday, improves to 24-4 overall and 12-1 in league. Tuesday the Pelicans opened with a 5-0 lead off of four Black Tornado hitting errors and a Klamath block. North climbed back in the match with three service points including two aces. Then the teams traded points until the match got knotted up at 10-10. Ali Mostue served three points, including an ace, for North and the Black Tornado ended the game with a kill from Lacey Dalton and an attack error by Klamath. The Pelicans also jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second game as the Tornado made five straight hitting errors. Ali Piff got the sideout for North with a kill and the Black Tornado rallied to an 8-5 advantage as Piff served two points including an ace. Mostue served four points to stretch the lead to 12-5, before the Pelicans closed to 12-10 with four more errors by the Tornado and a Pelican block. The teams traded four sideouts before Mostue got the 14th and 15th points with a block and a kill for the win. "Klamath is the most improved team in our league in the second half of the season," Beick said. "I was impressed with the fact that we can be down by that much early in the match and come back. That shows good resolve and confidence in ourselves, which will be a key in the playoffs." Mostue finished the night with nine kills, four digs and two aces to lead the Tornado. Dalton added four kills and two digs, and Happel had four kills, four digs and two blocks. The Pelicans were led by Danielle Dobey with five kills and Kristina Matchett added three kills. ASHLAND 15-15, CRATER 12-10 -- At Central Point, juniors Amy Williams and Loriana Berman had a dozen digs apiece as Ashland knocked Crater from playoff contention. Chelsea Morgan led the Grizzles with 24 assists. Ashland is 10-3 in the SOC and 14-6 overall. ROSEBURG 15-15, EAGLE POINT 7-9 -- At Eagle Point, freshman blocker Kara Stuart had four kills and seven digs to lead Eagle Point. Junior Alaina Corliss had 13 digs and junior blocker Misty Bernhardt added three. The Eagles remain winless this season. SOUTH MEDFORD 15-4-15, GRANTS PASS 12-15-10 -- Senior Nicole Munoz had nine kills and junior Crystal Peterson added four as South slipped past the Cavemen. South (3-11) was anchored at the net by junior blocker Lynn Wooten and sophomore Carrie Doren. Megan Barry paced the Panthers with 24 assists and senior Kristin Russell added four kills.
