Mail Tribune 100: June 16, 1916 The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jun. 16, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Jun. 16, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News June 16, 1916 GET TOGETHER BANQUET PLANNED MONDAY EVENING The Commercial club, the Fair association and the Medford Merchants' association will give a dinner at the Hotel Austin Monday at 6:30 p.m. The affair will be an annual business meeting of the three clubs. Delegates from Ashland, Talent, Phoenix, Eagle Point, Butte Falls, Rogue River, Gold Hill, Central Point and Jacksonville will attend. Matters of supreme importance will be brought up and several speakers will present important data for the county. The dinner will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. and will be a five-course event. Music will be donated by Manager Chisholm of the Austin. It is requested that all members be present and to notify John Carkin or Secretary Latta of the Commercial club of their attendance. About fifty or sixty people will attend the meeting. ANIMAL COMEDY AT THE STAR THEATER The week of the circus train, or when the menagerie broke loose, is the extraordinary animal comedy, which will be the offering at the Star today and tonight only. This is positively a brand new print from the original negative and will no doubt be the most laughable comedy seen at the Star for some time. Animals run loose in a country village, in grocery stores, bar rooms, and down the main streets of a little town. Excitement and comedy is plentiful in this big comedy. WEST PHOENIX Dr. and Mrs. J. B. Webster and Dr. and Mrs. Gordon McCracken and family of Ashland enjoyed a very pleasant motor trip last Sunday, touching at Willow Springs, Rock Point, Gold Hill and Grants Pass. Before returning they visited the teachers' colony near Gold Hill and disposed of a delicious picnic lunch on the beach opposite the Rosalie ranch. Needless to say ample justice was done to the several dainties, the appetites of all being enhanced by the long ride. In spite of the recent frost scare there is quite a lot of thinning being done in this section. Dr. Webster is thinning apples and pears and there is a crew at work on the Brevard ranch thinning apples.
